"Breaking Bad" is known for its rich symbolism and meticulous details, with every element thought through by series creator, Vince Gilligan- including character clothing. A prime example is Marie Schrader (Betsy Brandt), the wife of DEA agent Hank Schrader, famously seen in all shades of purple. From outerwear to her home decor, Marie is painted in purple. Yet, it is not just her favourite colour, it signals her delusions of grandeur, desire for nobility and power, and strong pride, despite being kept in the dark about her brother-in-law Walter White's involvement in meth production. Fans have theorised that Marie wears purple not out of her own preference, but for her beloved Hank's fondness for the colour. Following his untimely death, she abandons purple, and is seen in monochrome, signifying her grief and the loss of her illusions. This theory is further solidified in the spinoff "Better Call Saul", where Marie confronts Saul Goodman about Hank's death, herself bereft of her usual vibrant hues, embodied in somber black and white, a painful visual reminder of her shaken world in the absence of her husband and her prized purple.
